In 1992, an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck the island of Flores until it was felt as far as the island of Bali. At least 2,000 people die and 18,000 homes are damaged. Uniquely, the number of fatalities of female sex more than doubled the number of male victims.
